- Choose two or more subjects to compare and contrast. To have a good basis for a comparison and contrast, your subjects should share some features.
- Think about your purpose. Are you educating, entertaining, persuading? For whom are you writing this composition?
- Chose a specific topic. List the similarities and differences about the subjects. Arrange the details on your list in a clear, organized way before writing a paragraph of comparison or contrast.
- Write a topic sentence that clearly states what you are comparing and contrasting. This is the main idea.
- Use the details on your list to write the other sentences of your composition. Make sure that these sentences support the main idea. Make each similarity or difference a separate point.
- Use expression such as similarly, like, however, but, and on the other hand to help make your meaning clear.
